Wellington Oakdale Old Glory Marching Society's parades start at 11am in front of Al Weisman's former home near Pine Grove and Wellington. Everyone marches, nobody watches, to the beat of the Jesse White Drum Corps, traveling east to Sheridan Road, then over to Lake Shore Drive, where the route ends in front of St. Joseph's Hospital. At the end, volunteers dole out packs of candies and the Jesse White tumblers usually perform.

Mark Larson runs this destination that is centered around one massive, 5-story tall, 300 year old oak called "Goliath". For $20 pp, kids aged 5-adult can be harnessed and taught how to scale this tree, and then climbers can try it for as long as they like. The tree is fitted with a series of ropes that have special knots so you can use a combination of upper and lower body strength to scale up to the highest branches. He got the idea from a course he took at Atlanta based Tree Climbers International. Try tricks like the upside down "Batman", and he will also rescue you and bring you back to ground instantly. The views and sounds at the top are amazing. On the ground there's a basketball hoop, picnic tables and a grill, so your group can bring food and sports equipment along to make a day of your trek.

Christmas Pagent Invitation to Playgroup

Please consider joining us tomorrow, Thursday, December 17 at 6 p.m. for our annual Christmas Pageant! If you are interested in having your little one participate, they would make adorable sheep (see the attached picture). Please come to the church at 4 p.m. for costuming and dress rehearsal. My son was 1 1/2 last year and made an amazing wandering sheep.

We also have a potluck supper immediately following the Pageant. You are welcome to bring a dish to share or just come and enjoy the food that others have provided - there is always enough to go around!

Finally, around 7:30 those who still have the stamina are invited to join us as we cross the street to sing carols with the Sisters at the Cenacle Retreat House.

Come for one or all of the activities of the evening - and feel free to simply come and watch the Pageant. It's a wonderful little production and a great way to ring in the holiday season.

Tips for an Allergy-Safe Halloween

These helpful tips for being allergy-aware this Halloween can make trick or treating safe and fun for EVERYONE:

Be proactive. If you know of children in the neighborhood with food allergies, ask their parents what types of candies are safe. They'll be thrilled to know you care.

Keep a stash of “safe candy” or fun trinkets. Have fun trinkets on hand such as bubbles, Silly Putty, tattoos, stickers, spider rings and bracelets. Kids with food allergies or intolerance will be grateful to receive something they can actually enjoy.

Be discreet. If you know a child has food allergies, don't ask “Oh, you’re the one with the peanut allergy, right?” Kids want to fit in and don't like to be singled out.

Everyone loves ingredient labels. Give out candy with clear ingredient labels so parents and children can decide which candies are safe.

Don't drop candy into kids’ bags. Allow each child to select his or her candy. More often than not, they'll know which candies are safe and which aren't.

Listen to the children. If a child says “No thank you,” it may be because they don't see a safe option in what’s being offered. Don't make a fuss by insisting they take candy that may not be safe for them.

Parents know best. Don't assume that peanut allergy is the only allergy. There are many types of food allergies and food intolerances, so it’s important to let parents decide what candy is safe for their child.

Think of your guests. If you’re entertaining for Halloween, don't leave candy dishes unattended and be mindful of children “stashing” candy. Young children with food allergies may be easily tempted by “unsafe” candy."

I have a few of tips of my own: Allergic kids should carry two bags (parents can help if your child is very young)--one for the "safe" candy (to be thoroughly checked over at home) and one for the unsafe candy. In our family that would be anything from Reese's, Snickers, etc. I came up with this after a "peanut butter cup" explosion in a treats bag that ended up contaminating a lot of the "safe" stuff.

Also, make sure you're not tracking nuts into the house via candy that drops on the ground. Again, those pesky peanut butter cups usually wind up smashed all over our front stoop. Have everybody shed their shoes directly after Trick or Treating.

Finally, consider hosting a Halloween Open House for your kids. Allergic kids sometimes feel very left out when they have to dump 90% of their treat bags, so it's nice to give them something else to focus on. We're planning a simple "stop by when you're done Trick or Treating" gathering for a few kids/parents on the block.

Flu Vaccination - if you are interested

I just got a memo from our pediatrican (Town & Country Pediatrics) about flu vaccinations for this season and I read some interesting things. I thought I'd post them here while I investigate further:

1. Patients have wondered why flu vaccine is readily available at retail outlets (Dominick's, Walgreens, etc.), but limited at Town and Country Pediatrics. The retail outlet flu vaccine is manufactured in multi-dose vials and contains a preservative (thimerosal). Historically, our patients have preferred a preservative free vaccine. This is the reason Town and Country Pediatrics special orders only flu vaccine without a preservative (thimerosal). There is a limited amount of vaccine without thimerosal and both the orders and shipments are controlled by the manufacturer. The manufacturer is aware of our need for the vaccine and is doing its best to supply us as quickly as possible.

2. Please remember that the H1N1 flu vaccine is different from the seasonal flu vaccine. We are still waiting for a response from the Chicago Department of Public Health to find out whether we will receive the government-purchased H1N1 vaccine in our office for our patient population. Our application is currently pending. The FDA approved H1N1 vaccine from 4 manufacturers yesterday. Our information about the administration of this vaccine and when it may become available is taken directly from the website of the Centers for Disease Control.

3. If we are able to administer the H1N1 flu vaccine in our office, we will follow the CDC mandated guidelines for administration to our patient population. The U.S. government will require Town and Country Pediatrics to document who is receiving H1N1 flu vaccine so we will follow tier guidelines that will be set up by the CDC.

Playgroup Re-Opening!

Hello parents!

I am so sorry that the Playgroup has been on hiatus for nearly the entire summer. The flooding we experienced brought more problems than a simple carpet cleaning could handle. We wanted to make sure the carpet was clean and the area safe before inviting people back in.

We are on the brink of re-opening the space! Carpet layers are scheduled to be here next Thursday, 9/10. As long as that goes according to plan (please pray for us!), we should be able to re-open for Tuesday, 9/15; Wednesday, 9/16; and Thursday, 9/17. I will send a confirmation message out after the work has been completed.

Thank you all for your patience. There continues to be growing interest in the playgroup; I have received Meetup group membership requests from 4 people in the last 3 weeks! I hope that as we re-open and re-launch this fall, you all will have a great time playing together and forming new friendships.

Dear All - I hope that no one minds this post - it's just informational.

Our playgroup is not connected to any religious tradition, but it is sponsored by The Church of Our Saviour, an Episcopal parish, and our play space is in the church school "atriums". The Playgroup Coordinator is Josh Frank, who is the Youth Minister at COS. Josh has a toddler son who participates in the playgroup.

I'd like to share some info about the very special children's church school at COS, in case you're looking for a truly exceptional program. Children's Formation ("Sunday School") at COS uses "The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd", which is a Montessori based program. It is a gentle and thoughtful program. Please feel invited to explore this special type of "Sunday School" even if you are not affiliated with COS. About it from the COS Newsletter:

Fall Focus - September 2009
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd - Beginning September 20th at 10:00am with a family breakfast.

What is wonder? Could it be the source of activity? Like a magnet that pulls you forward, is a sense of wonder what moves you to reach?
Wonder is different from just being interested in something.
Wonder causes us to respond.
Wonder is a precursor to faith.
In Catechesis of the Good Shepherd wonder is cultivated at every age by giving children choices that will allow them to reach on their own, and with others, toward God.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is an approach to the religious formation of children age 3-12 years. It is based on the conviction that God and the child are in relationship. Drawing upon Holy Scripture, the Church liturgy and Montessori methods of education, the catechist (a carefully trained and dedicated, catechist is Greek for "teacher of faith") is able to foster the child's natural sense of wonder and love for God. Catechists work with small groups of children to help them develop their own unique relationship with God.

Some of the materials available in the atriums draw upon events in Jesus' life, including the Last Supper, the Kingdom parables and the infancy narratives. Other materials include a relief map of the Holy Land, a model of the city of Jerusalem, a liturgical calendar; and replicas of the articles of the Eucharist.

The Atrium is a classroom where Catechesis presentations take place. The term dates back to the early Roman Church where the atrium referred to a room where those coming into the Church were taught. It is "a place of preparation."

The catechist's strive to foster a sense of sacred space within the atrium. The child's experiences in the atrium helps to prepare them for involvement in the larger worshipping community. Some refer to the atrium as a place for conversation with God.

This formation grounds children with Christian roots, strengthens the foundation of their faith, and nurtures their development into a whole, joyful human being.

Atriums open at 10:00 am at Church of Our Saviour.
Families are encouraged to bring their children at that time to have the fullest possible experience. While a presentation takes place at some point, the opportunity for wonder has already begun. We understand all the work that goes into getting a family to church, and deeply appreciate your efforts to respect the atrium, catechists and other children by entering the atrium as close to 10:00 am as possible.

Invitation to Community Families: Vacation Bible School!

Hello parents and friends,

Charles Murphy and I will be leading this year's creative, fun, and energetic Vacation Bible School in just under two weeks! Each day the children will be presented with a bible story and music, and will work collaboratively to create a short skit to perform for parents at the end of the day. There will be story telling, music, art, games, and more. Charles is a gifted musician that often leads music for children and families during worship and other events at St. Chrysostom's Church, where he is the Youth Minister. His songs are unique to this experience and are one reason the kids from last year's VBS remember the bible stories (and even the tunes and some of the lyrics to the songs that accompanied the skits!).

Peter Civetta has been a huge help in guiding me through the structure for this type of summer program and I look forward to offering it myself this year.

The cost is $175 (never to be prohibitive, and we can pro-rate it for those not able to attend all five days).

We do need to have a firm number of registered children in order to make our final plans. Please send me an e-mail or give me a call to let me know your child is attending, then I'll have you fill out the registration form and return it to the church ASAP. Thanks!

Hello parents!

Some of you have visited us recently; others have inquired about the playgroup; and still others are semi- or regular attendees. In case we have not corresponded or met in person, my name is Josh Frank. I began working at Our Saviour as the Youth & Children's Formation Minister in August 2008. My wife Jillian and I have a 20 month old son named Jude. They attend the playgroup when they can, which is sporadic now that we live all the way north in Rogers Park (the church was able to house us our first 4 months in the city in the Rectory right next door, so they were in the Nursery ALL the time).

I wanted to let you all know about two changes to our Playgroup. The first one is minor: we have placed a table with a Sign-In/Sign-Out sheet next to the Nursery doors. We would like to be more responsible for our building's use, so this will help us know who is in the building. It will also help me track participation in the Playgroup. The leaders of the church occasionally ask for such information and it is good to let them know the space is being put to good use outside of Sunday morning!

Second, we are planning to shift one of the Playgroup days and times to a morning spot. Starting March 1, Playgroup days and times will be as follows:
Tuesdays, 2:30 - 4:30
Wednesdays, 9:30 - 12
Thursdays, 2:30 - 4:30

Hopefully the Wednesday morning time slot will allow people who have children that like to get out in the morning a chance to come and play together. This also means that during normal work weeks (as if I have one doing Youth and Children's Ministry!), I will likely be in the building during all three Playgroup times. Currently Mondays are my day off. Days and times remain the same for the rest of February (Mon/Tues/Thurs 2:30-4:30).

If you have any questions, please let me know. And please take a moment to stop upstairs and introduce yourself the next time you come to the Playgroup!

Report from the CDC, Recent Increase in Hib Disease in Children 0-5 yrs old

For families who have been following an alternative vaccination plan, this item might be of interest to you. I am not pushing any philosophy here - just providing info for families to consider. I received this notice from our pediatrician's office yesterday... [UPDATE: SEE REPLY TO VACCINE POST ON 4-12-09]

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced that five cases of Haemophilus influenza type B (Hib) invasive disease were confirmed in 2008 in Minnesota. Of the 5 babies who contracted the disease, 3 patients had received no vaccinations due to parent deferral or refusal of vaccinations. One healthy infant who was unimmunized was 7 months old and died of Hib disease.

Hib disease is a severe bacterial infection, occurring primarily in infants and children under 5 years. It can be the cause of meningitis, pneumonia, sepsis, epiglotittis (a severe throat infection), skin infections, and arthritis. It can be serious in children under age 1, but there is little risk of getting the disease after age 5. Transmission is most likely through respiratory droplets (coughing and sneezing). http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd- vac/hib/default.htm

Hib meningitis can result in death in one out of 20 children, and permanent brain damage in 10% - 30% of the survivors.

Before widespread use of the Hib vaccine, Hib disease contributed to 20,000 deaths in small children/year in the U.S.

If your child has been receiving regular checkups and is following the recommended schedule of vaccination there is no need to worry. Hib vaccine is recommended for all infants and is provided as a 3 dose series in the form of Pentacel (combination vaccine of DTaP, Hib, and IPV) at 2, 4, and 6 months. Although Hib bacteria are present normally in the community, vaccines given to infants can significantly decrease its communicability.

*With decreasing rates of immunization due to parental refusal, we are currently experiencing resurgence of these bacteria in our community. This is also referred to as herd immunity.

We understand that some parents are apprehensive about vaccinating their children. This is a timely and stern reminder for those hesitant about agreeing to follow the vaccination schedule published by the CDC.

Hib disease is nearly preventable with timely and complete vaccination.

If you have been following an alternative schedule, please take the time to think about fully vaccinating your infant or small child. Call the office for an immunization appointment today.

FEVER: DON'T ALTERNATE ACETAMINOPHEN AND IBUPROFEN

Fever may be the most common symptom why parents seek help from a health care provider. Even though fever is merely a symptom of an illness, its mere presence is enough to incite panic and fear for many parents. See our full explanation on fever and dosage charts.

Regimen for managing fever can include exposing a child to a lukewarm bath and/or administering anti-fever medications. Antifever medications may include acetaminophen (Tylenol or FeverAll suppositories), ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil). In recent times, it has become commonplace to administer these two medications in tandem alternating their use over a 3-4 hr period. For example, first a child may receive Tylenol and then 3-4 hours later receiving Motrin or Advil. This schedule for treating fever has been studied in only a few unsubstantiated clinical trials and the outcome of these trials is not enough to accept this as a safe method. The tandem use of these medications has not appeared in a few trials to lower fever more than the use of monotherapy (using acetaminophen or ibuprofen alone) anyway.

The science of using both of these medications is complex, however the medication and its broken down byproducts appear to concentrate in the kidneys. Of course for our littlest patients and for those with kidney compromise the synergistic use of these medications poses a major concern. Please refrain from alternating these medications in the future with your children.

Playgroup Mini-Musicians - Better and Cheaper!

We're into the fall session of Mini-Musicians music classes at the COS Playgroup. The session is 30 mins per class, for 10 weeks, running on Mondays, through Nov24. Participation in Mini-Musicians is by subscription and is optional. The teachers are trained in the Suzuki-Orff tots music method. Mini-Musicians is presented by Arts At Large, a not-for profit organization dedicated to bringing professional level music performance to underserved communities. CLASSES ARE ONLY $10! And just to prove that they are bending over backwards to satisfy all of our families' requests, you can have a first class for free, you can subscribe to an "a la carte" pass to take 5 classes of your choice anytime until June 1, 2009 (come ON!), or you can subscribe to the series up front (because you want to support their charitable good work even if you miss a class or two) for $100. They really want to make this work for us, and I hope that we can reciprocate.

Playgroup will occur 2-4:45pm on Mondays (instead of 2-4:30pm) and the classes will run between 3:15 - 4:30pm. Mini-Musicians will be held in the room next to the nursery, with easy back-forth access for caregivers who have 1 child in the class and 1 child in the free playgroup. Mini-musicians can play before/after class, and sibs can play concurrently! Ages 12 mos - 30 mos meet at 3:15pm, and ages 31 mo - 4 years old meet at 4:00pm.

Kids With Food Allergies - Safe Foods

My son is allergic to peanuts and treenuts. I am on a constant search for food items that can help him enjoy normal kids events without much disruption. These items I have found really help when I need "safe" versions of kids foods. Of course, always check the labeling before you consume, as recipes and ingredients can change. If anyone wants to share their food allergy solutions, please add your comments and identify your food allergy!
BIRTHDAY CAKE - nearly all commercially baked goods are off limits when you have nut allergies. However, Pepperidge Farm frozen cakes are presently NUT-FREE and not made on a shared mfg line. Available at your grocery freezer, they thaw in 20-60 mins... on the drive to the birthday party! Of course, we still must make sure the hands and eating surfaces are washed down.

PIZZA PARTY - most deluxe pizza places make something with pesto in their ovens. That makes most pizza off limits. What to do when your kid is going to a party where everyone is eating pizza? I go to Costco (only from the snack bar), Little Caesar, Papa John's, Domino's or bring Totino's, Lou Malnati's, or DiGiorno. I no longer call Dominos. I call one close to the party location, confirm they aren't baking any promo items with nuts, place an order for delivery (if they deliver) to the party address and let the host know. Again, we still make sure the hands and eating surfaces are washed down. ***Lately, Domino's has been unsafe after the introduction of baked sandwiches with sauce. Domino's corporate office told me that they cannot represent the sauces are safe.

CRACKERS, CHIPS, PRETZELS, CEAREALS - what I can say here is that Snyders' products are NOT SAFE. However, most made for kids brands (e.g. Gerber) are nut-free, but always check the labels. Ritz Crackers, Pirate's Booty, Crispix, Cheese-Its, Goldfish, Ritz Originals, Sun Chips, Cape Cod Chips, Rolled Gold Pretzels, Back to Nature Original/Apple/Blueberry Granola are presently nut-free.

***Organic does not mean safe. Annie's brand are not nut-free. Amy's brand is generally not nut-free. Barbara's brand may be peanut free but is not tree-nut free.

CANDY - this is a real danger zone for nut allergy sufferers. There's Vermont Nut Free Candies, but also, from most grocery or drug store candy aisles: Dum Dum Lollipops, Skittles, Lifesaver Gummies (not Gummy Bears!), Sweet Tarts, Trader Joe's Fruit Leathers are NUT-FREE. Chocolates, in general, are off limits because they are made on the same equipment as nut-containing foods. I have found that regular sized, silver foil wrapped Hershey's Kisses are safe.

ICE CREAM - another danger zone for nut allergy sufferers. Opt for Popsicles brand when you can (I have found most are safe), and read the label first. Most frozen treat makers have a flavor with nuts in it that is made on the same line as the flavors/items without nuts. Even italian ice mfrs use nuts. I have found Breyers Vanilla is essentially NUT-FREE. Unilever told me that they break down their equipment and thoroughly wash and test it for traces of nuts between batches. That's as safe as I have found, in the mainstream, and its a big company that cannot afford to be sued for false labeling. Their labels do not include nuts in their allergy statement, thereby representing through silence that there are not traces of nuts in their vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt. I am still very leery of even Breyers Vanilla ice cream though, and prefer to go with popsicles. Also, Annette's Homemade Italian Ice (Armitage@Bissell) can dish up NUT-FREE, no cross-contamination servings. They have several regular customers with nut allergies and segregate their safe italian ices in a separate freezer, and use scoops that are specially identified for the non-nut containers.

Chef Dominique Tougne of Bistro 110, 110 E. Pearson - has 2 children with severe food allergies. He was recently profiled in Living Without magazine on this very subject. At Bistro 110, he says that they will accomodate food allergies and in fact, do this each day with increasing regularity.

Kid's Health: How long is gastroenteritis contagious?

This from the nurse at Town & Country Pediatrics:

"The children are contagious about 2 days before they show symptoms and at least as slong as they have diarrhea symptoms at all... which is usually about 10 days after onset of symptoms. So about 12 - 14 days from start to finish to be sure your child is no longer contagious. This is an unreasonable length of time to keep them home but it is the CDC recommendation about rotavirus which is one of the most common causes of infectious diarrhea right now. Be careful and wash wash wash those hands!"
